2021 Security Predictions: Automation Drives Tidal Wave of Spear Phishing Campaigns

November 18, 2020 By The Editor

This year has brought dramatic and extreme change at every turn. The global COVID-19 pandemic has transformed business and life as we know it, accelerating the move to remote operations where employees work outside the protection of the corporate firewall. As we look ahead at what 2021 has in store with our annual cybersecurity predictions, we know cyber criminals will adapt to the times as well and find new ways to attack individuals, their homes and devices, in search of a pathway into your corporate network.

Our first prediction for 2021 is that automation will help cyber criminals launch spear phishing attacks at record volumes. Attackers will leverage new automation tools to streamline the manual aspects of creating these campaigns and pull in accurate, victim-specific data from social media sites and company web pages. All of this adds up to customized, believable spear phishing emails distributed en masse.
