How Small Businesses Can Protect Themselves from Data Breaches

Hacker

For small business, protecting company data is a big challenge. Unlike larger organizations, they don’t usually have the resources or money to recover from a serious data breach or cyber attack. A simple DDoS attack that takes servers offline could disrupt their revenue enough to drive them out of business. Or, a data breach that loses customer’s personal information could irreparably damage their brand. Unfortunately, these companies rarely have security experts on staff or the funds available to hire one. So what can they do?

WatchGuard’s Information Security Threat Analyst Marc Laliberte was recently quoted in a Network World article on this topic. He advised organizations to train their employees never to open unsolicited email attachment and to be cautious of URL links in emails from random addresses. This type of user education is a cheap, simple way for businesses without a plethora of security expertise to remain safer online.

The article also dives into a variety of other best-practices for smaller organizations, including recommendations for antivirus software, firewalls, passwords, encryption, patching and more. Read the full article in Network World.  We also cover SMB security in detail here on Secplicity – Marc outlines 5 key steps for Startup Security 101.
