WatchGuard Security Center: There's an App for That.

March 5, 2011 By Corey Nachreiner

Have you ever wanted to read this blog on the go, with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod?

OK, OK… You can already do that with iOS’s built in Safari browser, but that’s not very cool, is it? What would be cool, you ask? WatchGuard now has an iOS app that can deliver WatchGuard Security Center content, and much more, directly to your Apple mobile. The app is called WatchGuard REDnews, and you can download it today from the App Store in iTunes or on your iOS device.

REDnews consolidates many WatchGuard news feeds, such our Security Center and press releases feed, into one, easy to use application. It even includes a video section, where you can find many of the security videos we’ve released over the years. The application was developed by some of WatchGuard’s German sales team, so there are a few categories that cater primarily to our friends in Deutschland. However, the “Security” feed will be useful to anyone that wants to keep up with our latest security stories.

If you have and iOS devices and follow this blog, I highly recommend you go and grab WatchGuard REDnews. . — Corey Nachreiner, CISSP (@SecAdept)

That is pretty COOL! What would also be very cool is if there was an APP for our service technicians’ DROIDs. Due to all the reliability and availability issues on the AT&T Wireless Network, we did not want to deal with all the drop calls any longer, so several years ago we dropped AT&T and went to Verizon. As you know, until recently the iPhone was only available on AT&T which we will never use again. This is how we started to use the Motorola DROID. They are very, very good phones and Verizon Wireless is the best. Soooo…can we have an APP for us!

Good points, and we may have an app for you too. I just don’t know when. I was speaking to the sales engineer who had this iOS app made this week, and he claimed an android port should be relatively easy. He didn’t share any specific plans for when, but he made it sound like it was something they were already working on. I’ll let you know when I learn more.

Most people who would be managing WatchGuard appliances are highly technical people. I would bet that more of them are using Android devices now than iOS. Hopefully you guys get the app out for Android soon too.

Why iOS first? Most techs don’t use iPhones because of the closed uncustomisable nature of the platform! Android App ASAP please 🙂

Heh. Note taken. I see lots of Android fans out there, so we will certainly look at making something for that platform too.

By the way, do know we are very much planning on supporting VPN on iOS and Android, as well as many other new platforms. I don’t want to go into much detail until we are closer to releasing something, but do know WatchGuard is very aware of the need for secure access from these popular platforms.

I think there is some confusion going on in this comment section… just to clear up.. I believe Dominic Haussmann (one of WatchGuard’s Europe-based Sales Enginners), may have a Beta Android app for REDnews… this is the app that will show you the WatchGuard Security Center Feed, as well as some other resourses.

We DO NOT yet have a beta to offer for an Android VPN app. We are working on getting Android VPN support to our XTM appliances, and when a Beta for that support is available, we will announce it in our normal channels. But currently, the only Android beta app that we may have is for REDnews. In the post above, Dominic mentioned you can send him an email to try it… In the meantime, since there is a lot of response to this, I’ll contact him, and see what I can learn about the Android REDnews beta.

Hopefully, everyone saw my comment above. However, if you didn’t, here’s a summary and update.

I feel like there is a bit of confusion over what “beta” android app we have. This posting is about REDnews, an app for iOS that displays updates from various WatchGuard RSS feeds and resources. When Dominic talked about a Beta App, we was referring to this REDnews app. If you are interested in the REDnews app, it is already available on the Android market (since this is an old post). You can get the Android version of REDnews here:

      https://market.android.com/details?id=com.appmakr.app147164&hl=en

In the comments of this post, I also mentioned that WatchGuard is working on Android VPN support. I believe some people that followed these comments confused the REDnews beta with a VPN beta. There is no Android VPN beta app yet. It is true that WatchGuard is working on Android VPN support. However, there is no beta for this VPN support yet. It is currently scheduled for sometime in 2012.

I would also be very interested in Android app. It is only a matter of time before people start replacing Windows notebooks with Android tablets like the upcoming Asus Transformer Prime. Offering this option will soon become a key deciding point for IT management when it comes to deciding on a VPN solution.
