If the Guardians of the Galaxy Were Hackers…

Guardians of the Galaxy

Earlier this month, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 took box offices by storm. Arguably the best part about this franchise is the unique characters. The new film features audience favorites from the original and newcomers – each with their own exceptional set of characteristics and skills. In his latest column on GeekWire, WatchGuard CTO, Corey Nachreiner draws some fun and educational comparisons between this gang of galaxy defenders to various types and real-world blackhat hackers.

For instance, Corey compares Peter Quill (Star-Lord) to the infamous “script kiddie” hacker. If you haven’t seen the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, you need to watch them ASAP! You’ll quickly realize why Peter Quill embodies the spirit of script kiddie hackers; mischievous youngsters trying to perfect basic hacking skills. In the end, both young Star-Lord and real-world script kiddies end up faced with the same question: Should I use my skills for good or evil? Here’s a quick excerpt from the article:

“In the comic and movies, the Guardians are good guys — perhaps unwilling and money motivated good guys, but good guys nonetheless. I’d like to think if the Guardians existed they’ve have been whitehats trying to defend our networks from the scourge of cyber criminals. That said, it’s still fun to learn about the dark side of hacking by comparing pop culture characters to blackhat criminals.”
