Top Security Trends for 2017 Include IoT, Encryption and AI

 Security

At RSA 2017, thousands of corporate executives looked to hundreds of security vendors to identify the most important cyber security issues for them to address in the coming year. A recent Forrester report discusses the current state of security vendors’ offerings at the 2017 RSA Conference and identifies the top 14 cybersecurity trends for enterprises to watch in 2017.

Coverage of the report in Tech Republic highlights some of the major security challenges that Forrester believes enterprises will face this year. Here is a summary of three of those challenges:

1.      IoT-specific security products

a.  Security for IoT will become a larger issue as consumers and enterprises continue to adopt IoT devices and applications. Public knowledge of major botnet attacks like Mirai drove much of this interest. Technology solutions for IoT security exist, but are underdeveloped and people and policies also play a major role.

2.      Encrypting data practically

a.  Data encryption has become easier, but challenges like classification and key management still exist. Forrester noted that encryption is especially important for protecting personal data created by IoT devices and suggested using systems that allow users to keep data encrypted while it is being processed and analyzed.

3.      Improving vendor marketing and decreasing jargon

a.  “Threat Intelligence” has become an almost-meaningless marketing buzzword. Forrester noticed more vendors at RSA were trying to explain their value proposition more clearly. This is important because a good threat intelligence vendor can improve an organizations security significantly – if they are the right fit for that organization’s size and vertical.
