Much like keystroke patterns, how a driver applies their brakes can be used as a biometric identifier to “fingerprint” them with 87% accuracy in just 15 minutes.
This from a “Automobile Driver Fingerprinting” presentation by researchers from University of Washington & UCSD yesterday at the Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium, or PETS 2016, in Darmstadt, Germany.
So what? As Network World explained in theory:
If Alice and Bob rented a car together, but Alice was the only “authorized driver” and Bob also drives, then the rental company could tap into the dongle data to detect Alice was not driving. Say hello to fines and added fees from the rental agency after the rental agreement was broken.
There are sure to be privacy implications if the theory becomes reality, representing another incentive for hackers to go after IoT devices as data from these kinds of sensors becomes further engrained in our everyday lives.
