2018 RSA Recap: Day 4 and Marc’s Ethereum Presentation

It’s the last day of RSAC 2018, and more importantly, it’s the day WatchGuard’s Information Security Threat Analyst Marc Laliberte gave his presentation on Ethereum security. Congratulations Marc!

Ethereum, for those of you that don’t know, is a cryptocurrency/blockchain technology that is currently in second place behind Bitcoin in terms of market capital. Part of its popularity is because the Ethereum blockchain allows users to write full applications that run on the blockchain, rather than just send financial transactions. Marc’s talk explained some of the major hacks and vulnerabilities that have targeted the Ethereum blockchain like DAO, the Enigma ICO phishing attack, and other hacks that have stolen or locked up significant amounts of Ether.

Marc ended his talk with a challenge, which you can try for yourself. He’s created an intentionally vulnerable Ethereum Smart Contract called High Five Coin, which you can find at https://twitter.com/XORRO_/status/987418373150490624 and https://t.co/7aUvRe7vjl. The first person to find and exploit the vulnerability to redeem 1337 coins in one transaction will earn a little bit of Ether. Happy hunting!

That’s a wrap on RSAC 2018! The WatchGuard team had a fantastic time at the show and we hope you learned something from our highlight reels. If you were at the show as well, let us know your favorite part in the comments below. Until next year!
