Drone Spies on Hard Drives- Daily Security Byte

We’ve seen researchers exfiltrate data using electromagnetic feilds (EMF), high frequency audio, and even cellular frequencies, but this is the first time I’ve heard of a drone exfiltrating data from the blinky light on a hard drive.

The researchers at Ben Gurion University are know for sharing creative ways future attackers might steal data through covert channels, even when a computer is not connected to a network. Their latest research involves malware that takes over the light on a hard drive to send messages at a speed of 4000 bytes per second. Watch today’s byte to learn more about this attack, and how they might use a drone to recover the communications from a hard drive LED.
